# Set someone's pay: hourly rate and commission

Give each person an hourly rate and, if they earn commission, daily tiers. Each month they get the higher of the two; the app works it out but never pays anyone.

Pay lives on the **What they earn** tab of each person's record. Commission is worked out day by day, and the month is settled against their hourly pay.

Where to find it: MANAGE › Users.

## Before you start

- By default the owner, administrators, managers and Human Resources set pay. Nobody but the owner can change their own.
- Hours come from check-ins, so staff need to clock in and out: [Check in and out](https://zeropos.shop/help/check-in).

## Steps

1. Open [MANAGE › Users](https://app.zeropos.shop/backoffice/users) and tap **Edit** on the person's row.
2. Open the **What they earn** tab.
3. Type their **Hourly rate**.
4. Tap **Add tier** and fill in **From** and **To**: the range of the day's sales this tier covers.
   - Leave **To** at 0 on the top tier so it has no cap.
5. Pick the **Type**, **% of day's total** or **Fixed bonus**, and type the **Value**.
6. Type a day's total under **Preview** to see what that day would earn.
7. Tap **Save changes**.

## What happens next

- [Read your salary page](https://zeropos.shop/help/my-salary) and **Team salary** use the new rate and tiers straight away, for past months too. A payroll run already saved keeps its figures.
- The next payroll run uses them ([Team salary and payroll runs](https://zeropos.shop/help/payroll)).
- Nothing is paid: you pay people yourself and log it as an expense ([Record an expense (including wages you paid)](https://zeropos.shop/help/log-an-expense)).

## How pay is worked out

Each day stands alone. The person's sales that day, less refunds, pick one tier, and that tier applies to the whole day, not just the part above it.

Example: tiers from 0 to 400 at 25% and from 400 with no cap at 27%. A day ending at 800 earns 27% of 800. The next day starts again from zero.

At month end the daily commission is added up and compared with the hourly rate × hours worked. They are paid whichever is higher, never both; with no tiers, they are paid by the hour.

Bonuses and deductions are added on top of that: [Team salary and payroll runs](https://zeropos.shop/help/payroll).

## What earns commission

Commission is counted on sales without VAT. When two sellers share a sale with **Add seller**, each earns on their own share.

Selling a gift card earns commission on the day it is sold. What a gift card later pays for earns nothing, so the same money is never paid twice.

A layaway earns on each payment, on the day it is taken. A refund takes the commission back on the day of the refund.

## Common questions

### Is commission worked out with or without VAT?

Always on the total without VAT, so there is nothing to choose. In a shop that charges no VAT the two are the same.

### Can I give a one-off bonus?

Yes, from the salary pages with **Add adjustment**: [Team salary and payroll runs](https://zeropos.shop/help/payroll).

### Does reaching a target pay extra?

No. Targets only show progress; pay comes from the rate and tiers here ([Set monthly targets](https://zeropos.shop/help/targets)).

## If you see this

- ““cannot_edit_own_pay”” — What to do: Only the owner can change their own pay. Ask someone else who manages staff, such as the owner, to change yours.

## Good to know

- Tiers are daily, so a big day can't make up for a slow one: set the brackets around a normal day's sales.
