Markup and margin are not the same number
Markup is what you add on top of the cost, as a share of the cost. Margin is what you keep out of the selling price, as a share of the price. They describe the same profit from two ends, so the margin is always the smaller figure.
Suppliers and trade price lists tend to talk in markup; your accounts and reports talk in margin. Mixing them up is the commonest way a shop ends up earning less than it thinks.
Setting a price from the margin you want
To keep a given margin, divide the cost by what is left once the margin is taken: price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). Adding the margin to the cost as if it were a markup gives a lower price and a smaller margin than you meant.
Tax on top, testers in the sum
Work margins on the price without VAT or IGI: the tax is collected for the government and never was profit. Add it afterwards to get the shelf price.
In cosmetics, part of the stock never sells: testers opened for customers to try, and products that arrive damaged. Each one costs you the full cost price, so a shop with a lot of testers needs a little more margin on what does sell.
How Zero POS does this for you
Your margins, from every sale
In Zero POS every product carries its cost price, its price and, if you want one, a minimum price customers never see. Sellers never see the cost at the till or on receipts, and a sale below the minimum needs a manager’s approval.
The accounting overview works your gross margin out on net revenue without VAT, from each product’s cost price. Testers and damaged stock are recorded in a few taps and show as inventory losses, so you see what the shelf really costs.
