Flat rates: treatments and retail apart

Most salons pay commission as a percentage of what each person takes, and many use two rates: one on treatments, one on the products they sell. The two earn the business very different margins, so a single rate tends to overpay on one and underpay on the other.

Work each part out on its own takings and add them up. The calculator also shows the effective rate — the commission as a share of everything the person took — which is the number to compare when you change the rates.

Tiered bands: one table, two ways to pay it

Bands reward a busy day or month: the more someone takes, the higher the rate. But the same table can be paid in two ways, and a contract that doesn’t say which leaves room for an argument.

Paid on all the takings, the band someone reaches sets the rate for everything they took. Paid in slices, each part of the takings earns its own band’s rate, the way income tax works. The first is simpler to explain and jumps at each threshold; the second rises smoothly.

Count it on the right figure

Commission is fairest on takings without VAT or IGI: the tax was never the shop’s money. Take refunds off too, on the day they happen, so a returned product doesn’t keep paying.

Watch gift cards. If selling a card earns commission, the treatment it later pays for shouldn’t earn it again, or the same money is paid out twice.

Questions about commission splits

What is a salon commission split?
It is how the money from each service is shared between the person who did it and the salon. On a 40% split, a stylist or therapist who takes 2,400 in services earns 960, and the salon keeps 1,440.
Why pay a different rate on retail?
Services and products earn the salon very different margins, so one rate for both tends to overpay on one and underpay on the other. Many salons pay one rate on services and another on retail, and the calculator takes both.
What is tiered commission, and how is it paid?
Tiered commission raises the rate as the takings grow: 25% up to 400 and 27% from there, say. Paid on all the takings, 800 earns 216; paid slice by slice, like income tax, it earns 208. Write down which way you pay.
Is commission worked out before or after tax?
Before: count it on takings without VAT, IGI or sales tax, because the tax was never the salon’s money, and take refunds off on the day they happen. If selling a gift card earns commission, the service it later pays for shouldn’t earn it again.
Can Zero POS work out commission for me?
Yes. Zero POS works out each person’s commission from every sale they make, in daily tiers, and at the end of the month sets it against their hourly pay, so each person earns the higher of the two. Everyone sees their own figures on their salary page; you pay your team as you do now.

How Zero POS does this for you

Commission worked out from every sale

In Zero POS each person’s pay has an hourly rate and, if they earn commission, daily tiers: a percentage of the day’s total or a fixed bonus. The day’s sales, less refunds, pick one tier, and that tier applies to the whole day.

At the end of the month the commission is set against the hourly rate times the hours worked, and each person earns the higher of the two. Commission is counted without VAT, a shared sale pays each seller on their share, a gift card earns when it is sold, and a refund takes the commission back.

Everyone sees their own figures day by day on their salary page. Zero POS works the pay out; you pay your team as you do now.
