Tips: what customers can choose and who gets them
Switch tips on, choose what the till offers and decide who each tip goes to: whoever made the sale, a split with the team on shift, or everyone on shift.
Owners can change what each role may do.
Tips in Settings decides whether the till asks for a tip, what the customer can choose and who the tip goes to. In short, at the top, reads your choices back in plain words as you change them.
When to use it
Most shops in Europe never need tips, so they stay off until you switch them on. Come back here whenever the team agrees a new way to share them.
Before you start
- By default only owners and administrators can change these settings; managers see the page read-only.
- To share tips with the team on shift, everyone checks in at the shop each day (Check in and out).
Steps
- Step 1
Open MANAGE › Settings › Tips and switch on Ask for a tip.
- Step 2
Check the Percentages offered, then switch Custom percentage and Custom amount on or off.
- Leave a box empty to offer fewer percentages. No tip is always there, and every sale starts on it.
- Step 3
Under Work percentages out on, choose The total with VAT or The total before VAT.
- Both are the total after discounts. Your shop's own tax name shows in its place.
- Step 4
Under Who gets the tip, choose The person who made the sale, Split between the seller and the team on shift or Shared by everyone on shift.
- Step 5
For a split, set the Seller's part. For either shared rule, choose Equally or By hours worked under How the team shares its part.
- Step 6
Read In short to check it says what your team agreed, then tap Save.
What happens next
- The till offers the tip at payment from the next sale (Take payment at the till). A tip is never a sale: no tax, commission or loyalty points, and a refund never gives it back.
- Each sale keeps the rule it was taken under, so a change here never moves tips already taken.
- The team's part is shared once the day is over, among everyone checked in at that shop that day. Each person's tips show in the Staff report, Team salary and My salary (Pay, commission, targets and costs: which report answers what, Read your salary page), and the day's in the close (Close the day).
- Payroll never pays tips: you pay them out, cash tips from the drawer after the close.
The three rules, with an example
Ana makes a sale with a 20 tip, and Ben and Cara are checked in at the same shop. With The person who made the sale, Ana gets 20. When two sellers share a sale, they share its tip the same way.
With Split between the seller and the team on shift at 50 %, Ana gets 10 and Ben and Cara share the other 10: 5 each, Equally.
With Shared by everyone on shift, all three share the 20. Equally, about 6.67 each; By hours worked, with Ana on 8 hours, Ben on 6 and Cara on 2, they get 10, 7.50 and 2.50.
Who counts as on shift
Someone checked in at that shop on that day. A person checked in at another shop isn't counted, and neither is someone who forgot to check in, until a manager adds their shift with Add shift (Check in and out): the next time the figures are read, they get their part.
If nobody else was checked in, the team's part goes to whoever made the sale, so a tip is never left unpaid.
There is no share for the shop: tips belong to your team. In the UK and the US the law requires tips to go to the staff.
Questions
What happens to tips already taken if I change the rule?
What are Custom percentage and Custom amount for?
Should percentages be with or without tax?
Good to know
- Switching tips off hides the tip step at the till; tips already taken stay in the reports.
